I have the common HDMI switching issue. I decided to try and replace the capacitors as lots of people seem to have success, and I figured if I messed it up I would be able to get a replacement board.

Unfortunately when wiggling the first capacitor on the topside of the board rather than the capacitors leg snapping it pulled the solder contact point off the board.

Rather than having a place to solder the new capacitor I have an empty brown spot on the board. I'm guessing this has ruined the board. So far I've tried Gensys and they said they are not allowed to sell the boards, but to try Charles Hyde. They said they don't have any in stock and are having trouble sourcing them. I guess that explains the silly price. Does anyone know where I might be able to purchase the board? Many thanks in advance. Thought it would be interesting and a help to some, to find out just how many people have had HDMI board or other problems with their Onkyo receiver?

It will also give an insight into whether their customer service is any good. Its not intended as a diss Onkyo thread, its just that since having a problem myself I have been researching, and found its rather a big issue, and there are a lot of moans about customer service as well, so I though I would give people a chance to air their views on the subject here, and it avoids cluttering up other related threads.

Contacted Genserve who charged me c. Some 10 days later, had a call from them and they confirmed it was the HDMI board. They didn't carry stock so, had to order one yes, hard to believe, I know.

A further 10 days later, I had it back, with a 90 day warranty. It still works but, just waiting for it to go again. Won't be getting another! My chum had a TX-SR or not sure with the same issue. He dumped it! Perhaps a Poll would be useful? Trollslayer Distinguished Member. Got my in and it's fine. I noticed the heat build up and put a low speed fan above it, the case temperature there dropped to just above ambient and it is inaudible from 10cm.

The heat cycles will affect the electrolytic capacitors on the board first, try replacing those.Forums New posts Search forums. E-Books E-Books Quicklinks. Thread starter Anthony Melendrez Start date Aug 17, Anthony Melendrez Enthusiast. I went from an old Sony and I was immediately wowed by the hi-res audio and the video looked great.

Price was good and features are decent, but I wanted to hear from you fellow geek heads on what you thought about Onkyo receivers. I personally would not buy Onkyo or recommend Onkyo to any of my family and friends because of Onkyo's terrible reputation of customer service and failure rate.

Hopefully you will have good luck with your Onkyo. Would not be top of my list. Better than Sony lol. I think the issue for them has been quality, not performance. In the past, when quality wasn't an issue for them, I recommended them often.

Why AVR Recievers HDMI Board fail: Top Tips

Well, that is good to know. So far it has performed very well Thanks for the feedback. While I got that Onkyo partly due to its alleged video capabilities but find my displays do a better job so just pass that thru no legacy sources to upscale either.

I think many avrs have suffered a bit with quality issues in recent years, and Onkyo seemed to have the worst of it for a while; apparently Yamaha has had the best record in the industry these days fwiw.

Televisions are becoming more and more advanced as time goes on. The mainboard serves as the central hub for communication that takes place with televisions.

Whatever kind of Sony television you may have, they all rely on mainboards, or motherboards, to communicate with the television's output. These mainboards control everything from display output to Smart TV features, all the way down to the time and various personal settings. The components of the mainboard on a Sony TV can vary wildly depending on the make and model, but many TVs come equipped with the same basic components.

The mainboard on a Sony TV processes the results that are delivered from these devices and broadcasts them directly to the screen. The components available can increase the functionality of the Sony TV and allow users to view media from a wider range of external devices like video game consoles, streaming devices, and external computers.

The mainboard serves as the computerized brain of the Sony television, but it relies on other Sony boards to process information and to handle secondary viewing tasks. If your Sony display isn't functioning as it should, the problem may lie with something other than the motherboard. The motherboard for each TV is typically unique to the manufacturer. A Sony TV will require a Sony mainboard, for instance, but devices are often classified according to the style of television in question.

And which brands are more prone than others? I contacted Yamaha tech support and after troubleshooting the issue, the tech informed me that more than likely I had a HDMI board failure. Since I purchased the unit new in my warranty had run out.

Most cases say over heating. I keep a laptop fan on mine with air circulating out and never had a problem. I also read if you set the OHMS to 4 it reduces the heat. I agree with afterlife in that many board failures have more to do with heat, improper care, or a combination of the two if you really start digging into the claims. My advice is to give it plenty of air, plop a fan on top pulling hot air out directly abovev the HDMI board, leave the receiver setting on 8 ohm, and read this if you're interested in a more in depth explanation.

If it still fails at least you know it was a defect and not heat related. RichB Audioholic Field Marshall. There was never a failure, but it would not surprise me if the sockets could lift off the board over time.

Sorry about the pic but as you can see it's well ventilated, I doubt that was the issue. This has been it's home since I bought it. The Yamaha tech even "intimated" that there is an issue during our troubleshooting session. He didn't admit there's an issue overall but that they did see a higher incident of failure on HDMI circuit boards than all the other boards. And yes, I've been in many a home where people stack all their components on top of each other.

Maybe they're the people who are posting reviews. Last edited by a moderator: Oct 23, I highly doubt it's an issue, but the only thing I'll point out is that without an open back, the hot air is probably getting semi-trapped in the back there since that's where a lot of heat from the HDMI board is.Forums New posts Search forums.
